Souhrudam Camps :
Souhrudam Camps, the vacation camp for the children both sponsored and non sponsored was a major event during the period of April and May. 248 Vacation Camps were held for 51,527 children belonging to different parts of Kerala. 3808 volunteers facilitated at different places. The Souhrudam camps came to a close with the Souhrudam Meet on the 27th May at the Rajagiri Higher Secondary School Auditorium. 1700 sponsored children participated in the programme and was provided lunch and was taken to the Children's Park in the evening. A children human chain was formed from the Marine Drive to Children's Park expressing the solidarity and strength of children who are deprived of basic needs of life. A two-wheeler rally too was held in the morning on 27th to pass the message on ‘Souhrudam'.

Silver Jubilee Celeberations :
CASP-RAJAGIRI Jubilee celebrations-Souhrudam launched on the 8th of September 06 concluded with various programmes beginning from the 19th May 07. The first event that was held was the partners meet on the 19th May 07. A large group of our partners once again supported us with their presence and suggestions for the future. On 20th May 07 we had the Alumni Meet followed by the CASP Family meet the very same evening. The Alumni Meet was a great opportunity for the sponsored to recall good old memories and renew friendships ….. The Staff family Meet was indeed a long awaited gathering which saw all the family having a whale of a time. On 21st May 07 the Silver Jubilee Celebrations officially came to a close with the colorful function inaugurated by His Excellency the Governor of Kerala Sri.R.L.Bhatia. All print and Visual Media covered the programme much to our encouragement. More than 800 of our sponsored children from Ernakulam District participated in the event and the cultural show by children added color and luster to the events of the day. A Seminar was held on the topic - ‘Is Keralam Child friendly‘ at the Rajagiri college in which 150 participants including children were present. Eminent persons from various fields –Legal, Social, Health, Education and Media made presentations. The releasing of 2 books namely “Souhrudaman” and “Balasouhruda Keralam Ente Kazhchapadil” by Justice V.R.Krishna Iyer was also held on the same evening.


Sponsorship Related Programmes :
Distribution of sponsorship materials, House visits, Parents Meetings, Awareness classes on various topics for parents and children, Children's gatherings at all centers, Community teaching, Onam and Christmas/New Year celebrations at all centers, nutrition programmes, Medical Assistance, Medical Checkup, Career Guidance Camps etc., form part of the activities related to sponsorships assistance to children.

Special Camps :
One day Camp for nearly 100 HIV affected children, Children at risk and Children placed in homes was held on 8th September 2007 at Cochin.


Training Programmes :
•  47 Training programmes were held in the communities for parents on different topics - Parenting, How to be a good parent, Gender, Legal Literacy etc.

•  Programme for Local Self Government (LSG) Presidents on Govt. Schemes.

• 16 Staff members went to various organizations for Training.

• Human Rights Education Programme in 54 schools in 6 Districts of Kerala.

• 2 training for Animators.

• 2 Training for new staff.

• 8 PIC Meetings at the community level.

• 7 Community teachers training programmes in Trichur, Irinjalakuda, Kalamassery, Buddhanoor, Pothanikkad Panchayat, Arattupuzha, Kunnathunadu Panchayat.

• Training Programme on HIV/AIDS for Child Development Associates and Coordinators from Karuna Balvikas LMS Centre, Thiruvanthapuram.

• Training Programme for CASP Staff on HIV/AIDS was held on 7 th November 2007 by students of Maryland University, USA.


Observance of Senior Citizens Day :
Senior Citizens day was observed in collaboration with RMD and Programme Division at Taj Residency, Veegaland and Red Cross Bhavan (Geriatric Centre), Kakkanad on 1st October 2007. 250 elders from Kadamakudy, Kothad, Moolampilly, Chenur, Karikaatuthuruth, Pizhala and Kunnathunad had participated. It was the 10th Anniversary for the members of Day Care Centre at Kothad and they enjoyed the trip to Veegaland and Taj Residency.


Community HealthProgrammes :
• 4 Cataract Detection & Diabetes Retinopathy Camps were held in Kothad, Kalamassery, Pattimattom & Chennoor.

• One eye Camp was held at Rajagiri School Auditorium, which was supported by a team of doctors from Little Flower Eye Hospital in association with Lions Club Ernakulam.

• Adolescent Health Check Up Camps were held at Rotary Karmakendra on 23rd June 2007 with the support of the Co-operative Medical College Kalamassery and at Thrissur on 17th January 2008.

• Camps were held for the distribution of preventive medicines for Chikun gunya at Kalamassery, Pothanikkadu, Kothad, mundoor, Nadathara, Kadamakudy etc.

• Need Assessment Study on HIV affected children was conducted all over Kerala. Interviews with care givers, health care providers, counselors of VCTC, PPTC were held with the financial support from UNICEF, Chennai and organizational support from CPK .

• 300 health volunteers were selected from Tholur Panchayat and given an orientation programme on how to supplement the Health Insurance Scheme implemented in that Gramapanchayat.

• State level Consultation Meeting on Existing Programmes and Policies for HIV affected children in Kerala was held on 12th November 2007 with the support of UNICEF. Officials from the Departemnt of Health, Social-Welfare, Law Net work, Kerala Legal service Authority took part. Following the consultation CASP-Rajagiri was identified as the nodal agency of Kerala Forum for children affected by HIV/AIDs. The Kerala Forum for children affected by HIV/AIDs was constituted at the meeting held in Trivandrum in the month of January 2008.

AIDS Day was observed on Dec 1st in collaboration with Keraleeyam at Trivandrum - A poster drawing competition for school children was held in this connection at Cochin.


Kerala Scholarship Movement (Scholar Ship for Higher Studies) :
Scholar ship Distribution to 135 students through sponsorship from George and Sushila Foundation, Muthoot Pappachan Foundation, Geojit, and Sree Ramunni Paniker Udbhodan Trust, Spain was held on 20th and 24th October and 24th November2007. Directors /Officials from the above trusts and Foundations were present at the occassion.


Rotary Sneha Gramam Community Development Matching Grant Project :
50 rain water harvesting units and 50 sanitation units were constructed and handed over to the people of Kadamakudy Grama Panchayath on 22nd March 2008 with the financial assistance from Rotary Down Town Club ,Ernakulam. The project was commissioned by Mr. S. Sharma , Kerala State Minister for Fisheries & Registration.


Rotary Karmakendra :
Inauguration of Tailoring unit : Tailoring machines were distributed to SHG Group members by M.L.A.Yousaf. Members of Rotary club, Innerwheel club and Cochin Rotary International were present. 17 new machines and 10 old machines distributed to the SHG members. 13 machines were kept in the center. 3 SHG groups are active in tailoring programme. Nightgowns and cloth bag are being made. 1st phase of the Akshaya Computer Centre was completed. 505 families were trained in computer literacy through the 1st phase.


Classmate Education Programme, Malappuram-Sponsored by ITC LTd. :
Infrastructure improvement in 65 schools of 8 Education Blocks in Malapuram namely Nilambur,Wandoor, Areacode, Perintalmanna,Tirur,Tanur,Mankada and Perumbadappu were completed during this reporting period.Furniture worth Rs.50000/- for selected schools and notebooks worth Rs.10000/- for selected children is the major component of the project.As part of infrastructure support to schoolschild friendly baby chairs(450), Desk(1031), Bench(320), Shelf(55), Teacher's table(200) and teacher's chair(200) have been provided.3 days School camps were organised in all the schools.Activities like folk song training, story telling, group games, reading, family visits, cooking, skits and cultural programmes were carried out to develop creativeness and improve inborn abilities among the budding generation.On 14th Nov. 2007 (Children's Day)budding artist competition (Painting) was held at block level participating winners from schools. The project at Tirur and Tanur blocks were inaugurated in the month of January 2008. Mr. E Ahammed Dy. Minister for External Affairs, Govt.of India was the Chief Guest at the Tirur block level inaugural function. The projects at Mankada & Perumbadappu blocks were inaugurated by Mr.Paloli Mohammed Kutty, Minister for Local Self Govt., Kerala. Officials from ITC Ltd, representatives of Kerala Legislative Assembly, representatives of Panchayathi Raj institutions etc were presented.

On 29th March 2008 a concluding Programme of the first phase of the project was held at Malappuram.The seminar on CSR initiatives of ITC Ltd and future Programme was the major event.


Distribution of Solar Lamps :
Vidyadeepam programme was continued doing the reporting period. 17 sponsored children of Buddhanoor Gramapanchayt received solar lanterns as part of the innovative fund through Aditya - the Solar Shop.


Student Field Practicum :
9 international scholars from Germany, Belgium, Australia & USA have completed their field practicum under CASP in various projects and activites. 16 Social work students from various colleges of Kerala have also done their concurrent and Block placements in CASP.

Viswarogya Health Insurance and LIC Micro Insurance Schemes :
During the reporting period the universal health insurance policy of United India Insurance Co. Ltd was renewed for the benefit of the people of two grama panchayaths namely Tholur and Kunnathunadu.The amount for the renewal was contributed by M/s. Kochouseph Chittilapilly Trust. Micro Insurance scheme of LIC of India is being implemented in four grama panchayaths. Special animators were selected and given training on 12th Sept.2007.


Need Assessment Study :
Base line survey in four panchayaths were held during the year, namely Arattupuzha, Chingoly, Mullenkolly, and Pothanikad .The first two studies were under taken on the request of NTPC Ltd. CASP - Kerala unit have developed a soft ware for the data processing of such studies. The unit also had undertaken studies of two districts namely Idukki and Wayanad for the purpose of identifying the most deserving district for ITC's CSR support for the year 2008-09. The Need Assessment Studies in 5 grama panchayaths of PCPs in the nearby villages of NTPC namely Thrikunnapuzha, Muthukulam, Karthikapally, Cheppad and Pallipuram have begun in the month of February 2008 which is sponsored by NTPC Ltd.


New Partnership Projects :
This year 3 community partnership projects were initiated. The project at Konni is sponsored by Muthoot Pappachan Foundation in which child sponsorship, medical insurance scheme and higher education scholarship are the major components.The project at Binanipuram is sponsored by M/s.Binani Zinc Ltd. The components of the project are child sponsorship, Day care for elderly, medical insurance scheme and higher education scholarship.The 3rd project is in collaboration with Thalassery Social Service Society. The project is being implemented in Kannur and Kasaragod districts.


Children Against Child Labour :
CASP unit in association with Labour Department and Childline could creat awareness among children and public about the unhealthy practice of employing children. The programmes were held in Thrissur & Ernakulam district as part of Child Rights Awareness Week (Nov 14 – 21). Mr. P. K. Gurudasan, Labour Minister of Kerala State was the Chief Guest of the campaign in Ernakulam district. Cycle rally, awareness classes, processions, street plays by children etc were the main components of the campaign.


Child Guidance Centre :
In January 2008 CASP unit put implement a very innovative project in association with Eloor grama panchayath. Regular child guidance centers were established in 9 schools coming under the panchayath. Awareness classes to parents, orientation to teachers, career guidance classes to school final students etc were part of the project. Resource persons for the Programme were from CASP only.
